Barnstormers Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Mike
Hohensee has announced his coaching staff for the for the upcoming AFL
2013 season. The staff includes two familiar faces to Barnstormers fans
along with one newcomer.
Returning
for a second season is Defensive Coordinator is Ernesto "Netto"
Purnsley. Purnsley has coached in the AFL for 13 seasons, beginning with
stops in Albany, Indiana and Colorado. As Defensive Coordinator in
Colorado, his defense led the team to 3 division titles and an ArenaBowl
XIX Championship in 2005. In 2008, Purnsley joined Hohensee in Chicago
as Defensive Coordinator for the Chicago Rush. In 2010, he was named
Head Coach of the AFL's Utah Blaze, however his tenure lasted just one
year. Purnsley reunited with Hohensee in Philadelphia for the 2011
season before following him to Iowa in 2012.
Returning
for a third season with the Barnstormers is Special Teams Coordinator
Trever Whiting. Whiting joined the Barnstormers staff in 2011 under John
Gregory and was the only holdover to continue with the club under
Hohensee in 2012. Whiting brings a tremendous amount of experience with
him, having coached at Central Methodist University, Campbellsville
University, Graceland University, and Kansas Wesleyan University. On the
pro level he has spent time with the Lincoln Capitols (NIFL) and the
Omaha Beef (IFL). In addition to special teams, Whiting will assist
Hohensee with the development of the team's Wide Receivers.
Joining
the Barnstormers coaching staff for 2013 is newcomer Kyle Moore-Brown.
Moore-Brown will focus on the development of the Barnstormers O
offensive and defensive line play. He spent the 2012 season as the Head
Coach of the Cedar Rapids Titans (IFL), leading them to a 4-10 record.
Moore-Brown has a wealth of experience as a player in the Arena Football
League. He spent 15 years playing Center for Albany (1995-2000),
Indiana (2001-03) and Colorado (2004-08). He is known as one of the
game's all-time ironmen, having made 236 consecutive starts.
"I
couldn't be any happier with the coaching staff that we have assembled
for the 2013 season," stated Hohensee. "We have a group here that is
very experienced, and ready to pass along that knowledge to our young
players. I can't wait to see the results."

Barnstormers Games Returning To WHO Radio
The
Iowa Barnstormers have reached an agreement with Clear Channel
Communications that will make WHO-1040 AM the exclusive radio home of
the Arena Football League franchise for the next three seasons.
Beginning in 2013, all Barnstormers games, both home and away, will be
aired live behind one of the strongest signals in the United States.
“We are extremely excited to announce our newest partnership with WHO radio”, stated Barnstormers Team President Jeff Lamberti. “This agreement will allow us to expand our marketing efforts throughout the state of Iowa and give us the opportunity to gain new fans. We truly feel that the Barnstormers are back where we belong.”
The move should be a popular one with fans of the team. Barnstormers games had previously aired on WHO from 1995-2001 under the club’s original ownership. Team officials hope the return to WHO will increase their fan base, making them more appealing to fans statewide.
“We are thrilled to have the Iowa Barnstormers back on their original airway, WHO radio, Clear Channel Communications Regional Market Manager for Iowa Joel McCrea added. “The Barnstormers understand what we are all about, and that made this an easy deal to finalize. Iowans love football and we want to be part of that experience.”
The 2013 Barnstormers season kicks off on Saturday, March 23 when the team travels east to face the Chicago Rush. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, April 5th when the Spokane Shock comes to town. Details on who will be handling the play-by-play duties for all broadcasts are currently being finalized and will be announced shortly. A major announcement regarding the Barnstormers weekly radio show will also be made in the coming weeks.

AFL Joining The Breast Cancer Fight
The
month of October has had you seeing pink! To raise awareness and
research funds for breast cancer, many organizations nationwide have
made efforts to keep top of mind the disease that impacts so many women,
their families, friends and colleagues. The Arena Football League is
happy to do its part in helping to raise awareness and funds to combat a
disease that affects many of our players, front office staff and fans.
Chicago Rush President and General Manager, Roger Wexelberg was impacted by breast cancer after his sister was diagnosed 10 years ago.
“My sister had to go through chemotherapy, radiation and a double mastectomy,” Wexelberg said. “Needless to say, it was a huge shock and a lot ofanxious moments for everyone in our family.”
Many teams throughout the League have joined in the fight against breast cancer by choosing one game each season and designating it as the breast cancer awareness game. San Antonio, Iowa and Milwaukee all held games to help raise awareness. The game included pink gloves, chinstraps, sweatbands and a football with a pink stripe. When Iowa auctioned off autographed pink striped footballs during the game, the auction alone raised $2,000 for breast cancer research. Similarly, San Antonio auctioned autographed pink gloves and wristbands. Proceeds which reached $2,500 went toward breast cancer research as well.
Iowa’s game held a great deal of meaning for Barnstormers’ linebacker David Bedford, whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier in the season.
“I was up in Iowa and I found out during a game week so I wasn’t able to go home or anything,” Bedford said. “I dealt with it up there with the team.”
During the pregame presentation, Bedford spoke to the local media about his mother and the importance of raising funds and awareness for the disease.
“It meant a lot to me to be a part of our awareness night,” Bedford said.
Bedford used his teammates as his support system while he coped with his mother’s diagnosis.
“My teammates came up to me and told me how they are all going to pray for me, so they were great,” Bedford said. “The coaches asked me if I wanted to take some time off and I told them I could deal with it but at the same time continue to play.”
While the National Football League may have led the charge to bring awareness to the disease during October, the AFL is able to shed light upon the issue of breast cancer during months where it might go unnoticed.
“The League is doing a great job because obviously October is the big month for awareness and that’s when most people are thinking about it but we need awareness year-round and it’s important to have other months with breast cancer awareness games,” Bedford said.
Wexelberg’s sister is now a 10-year survivor of the disease.
“It just makes you grateful in our case that everything is alright but it also makes you think about the families and the people that aren’t so lucky,” Wexelberg said.
Bedford also shared good news regarding his mother’s condition.
“She is done with all of the chemo that she is required to do. Scans have come back clear but I am sure that the doctors will definitely be keeping an eye on it,” Bedford said. “She is ten-times stronger than I am so I knew she would be fine and that she would be able to beat it.”
While both Bedford and Wexelberg agree that the League has done a good job raising awareness and funds for breast cancer, there is always room for improvement.
“Bringing the awareness level up is hugely important,” Wexelberg said. “Then conversely making that parlay into dollars because at the end of the day that’s what we need to make sure families don’t go through it in the future.”

Barnstormers Launch "Fandemonium" Contest
In
conjunction with the season-long celebration of the 25th anniversary of
the Arena Football League and their "Year of the Fan" promotion, the
Iowa Barnstormers announced details today regarding the launch of their
"Fandemonium" Contest. Over the course
of the next two months, 25 lucky winners will be selected to run out
onto the field during team introductions with a Barnstormers player or
coach during Iowa's June 1st home game against the Cleveland Gladiators.
The game will be nationally televised on the NFL Network. The contest
is open to Barnstormers fans of all ages and there are several different
ways to enter to win including:

Statement from Iowa Barnstormers President Jeff Lamberti
Dear Barnstormers Fans,
Many of you have heard the news of a potential labor dispute between the AFL's Owners and Players. This afternoon, I am pleased to announce that the work stoppage has been called off and that we are moving forward as planned. We had full confidence all along that our players would honor the contracts they signed because we have assembled a group of young men with tremendous character. With that being said, it's time to play some football! Hopefully I will see you all Monday night at Bennigan's for the watch party, Tuesday night at OverTime for the radio show and most importantly one week from tonight, Saturday March 17th for our home opener against the Utah Blaze.
