Football League Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz is scheduled to serve as a
guest panelist at the National Sports Law Institute of Marquette
University Law School’s annual conference, “Current Legal and Business
Issues Affecting International and Professional Sports” on Friday,
October 19th, 2012.
The
conference, which will be held in Eckstein Hall at the Marquette
University Law School in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will feature a
variety of panels, ranging from legal and business issues in Olympic and
international dispute resolution to perspectives on sports facility
development. Kurz will join representatives from Major League Baseball,
the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association in
discussing current legal and business issues in professional sports.
A
founding member of the Arena Football League and an inaugural inductee
into the AFL Hall of Fame, Kurz served as the AFL’s Vice President of
International Development from 1987-2008 and was responsible for
administering the H3 Visa Program, which allowed international players
to play for AFL teams stateside. In an effort to relaunch the AFL in
2009, he developed a unique economic model for the League.
Kurz,
who has served as the AFL’s Commissioner since 2010, received a
five-year contract extension in May 2012 to remain the Commissioner of
the League through the 2017 season.

AFL Lands ArenaBowl XXV Partnership with AVITAE
While
the AFL agreed to terms on a multi-year CBA, the Arena Football League
and AVITAE Caffeinated Water also reached a title partnership agreement
for ArenaBowl XXV, AFL Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz announced today.
The League’s Championship game, slated for Friday, August 10, 2012, will be coined “AVITAE ArenaBowl XXV”. The game, which culminates the League’s celebration of its 25th Anniversary, will be played at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, LA and will be televised nationally on NFL Network.
“AVITAE’s support for the Arena Football League during our extensive labor negotiations was unwavering. We are thrilled to announce the AFL’s title partnership with AVITAE for ArenaBowl XXV,” Kurz said. “AVITAE has joined a group of tremendous partners who believe in and are dedicated to the success of the league and its players. So much of what has been accomplished can be attributed to their support.”
“They never gave up on hopes for the 25th season of the AFL,” Kurz said. Staring down a labor dispute between the AFL and AFL Player’s Union, AVITAE pledged its full support, backing a resolution between the two parties.

AFL, AFLPU Agree to Terms on Multi-Year CBA
Terms of a multi-year agreement between the AFL and AFLPU have been reached, the Arena Football League announced this evening.
The two sides, led by AFL Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz and AFLPU Executive Director Ivan Soto, have been in extensive meetings throughout the weekend in Chicago and have now executed a term sheet which brings the labor dispute to a close. The two parties plan to sign the full-length CBA on Wednesday, June 20th.
“I would like to thank both the AFL Labor Committee and the executives of the AFLPU for the long hours they have put in over many months, but most especially the last two days to get this deal done,” Commissioner Kurz said. “I would also like to thank our fans. We know how upsetting any disruption to the sport you love can be and we want to thank you for your patience and understanding. This has most certainly not been an easy process, but it has been a necessary process to help the Arena Football League continue to move in the right direction for our teams, players and fans. We look forward to turning our full attention back to the game on the field and enjoying the 25th season of Arena Football.”
Full terms of the deal have not yet been released, but details of the agreement will follow in the coming days.

Commissioner Kurz Agrees to Multi-Year Extension
The
Arena Football League Board of Directors voted unanimously to extend
the contract of Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz, the League office announced
today. The five-year contract extension puts Kurz at the helm of the AFL
through the 2017 season.
Kurz entered his third season as League Commissioner in 2012 after signing a multi-year extension last April. He has been involved with the game for 26 years, including five seasons as President of the af2. He also served as the AFL’s Vice President of International Development from 1987-2008, introducing countries such as Spain and Germany to the game of Arena Football.
“It’s been a privilege to lead the Arena Football League and watch it progress since the beginning,” Kurz said. “I am tremendously honored to continue to help lead its growth.”
The Board of Directors voted the approval of the multi-year deal last week. The result was a unanimous decision.
Commissioner Kurz is the lone remaining AFL executive to have been involved with the League since its inaugural season in 1987.
