Sharks' Preseason Pet Food Drive a Major Success
The 2012 South Division Champion Jacksonville Sharks and First Coast No More Homeless Pets teamed up for a pet food drive as part of the Sharks' preseason scrimmage Friday, March 15. Thanks to the generosity of Sharks fans, the initiative was a tremendous success, raising more than 15,000 lbs. of pet food.
Representatives from First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) collected donations outside the arena as fans brought bags and cans of dog and cat food in lieu of a charge for admission to the game. The drive also generated $1,700 in monetary donations, funds that will be used to assist the day-to-day operations of FCNMHP's clinic.
"I can't thank our fans enough for their generosity," Sharks managing partner Jeff Bouchy said. "We're proud of the impact that we made with this pet food drive, and we can't wait to partner with First Coast No More Homeless Pets again in the future."
"These donations will help us feed hundreds of pets that might otherwise go hungry or be relinquished to a shelter," said Rick DuCharme, founder/executive director of FCNMHP. "The monetary donations from Sharks fans will help fund our programs that are ending the needless killing of dogs and cats in our community. Partnerships like this help us make a bigger impact in the lives of animals in need."
WJXT Channel 4 served as the media partner for the preseason scrimmage and pet food drive, utilizing their platform to raise awareness about the event and FCNMHP's mission.
The donations of pet food will help FCNMHP take a step toward achieving no-kill status in Duval County. The organization strives to help keep pets out of shelters and with their families, and the contributions made by Shark fans will go a long way toward reaching that goal.
VooDoo Set To Open Regular Season Against Rivals
The New Orleans VooDoo kicks off the regular season this Sunday as the team hosts its South Division rivals, the Orlando Predators.
The VooDoo looks to win their third consecutive game against the Predators, having swept them in two seven-point victories last season. The VooDoo begins the quest to return to the playoffs as the Predators are hoping to rebuild after a dismal 4-14 season.
Head Coach Pat O'Hara, who coached in Orlando two seasons ago, said that practice has been good and the team also has an extra day to prepare, considering they mostly play games on Saturdays. The team returns to practicing in pads later in the week ahead of Sunday's home opener.
The Predators are a team that the VooDoo knows well, not just because the two teams are division rivals, but Assistant Coach Doug Miller was on O'Hara's staff in Orlando two seasons ago along with four players on the VooDoo roster who also spent time with the Predators, including wide receiver Chris Duvault, middle linebacker James Bryant, defensive back Leslie Majors, and defensive back Eddie Moten. The veteran Moten specifically expressed a desire to beat his former team, considering he played for Orlando last season.
Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at the New Orleans Arena.
